Iran raised a new doubt on a peace plan heralded as a strategically significant change on Saturday by threatening to block a corridor planned in the Caucasus under a regional agreement brokered by US President Donald Trump, according to Iranian media.
Earlier, a senior Azerbaijani official reaffirmed its support for the idea, saying that Trump’s announcement on Friday was only one step away from a complete peace agreement between his nation and Armenia.
Southern Armenia would be traversed by the Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity (TRIPP), which would provide Azerbaijan with a direct path to its exclave of Nakhchivan and, ultimately, to Turkey.
The White House said that the corridor would enable increased development and that the US would have the sole authority to build it.
