As part of a plan to increase legal immigration avenues in response to labor shortages, Italy announced Monday that it will grant around 500,000 extra work permits for non-EU nationals between 2026 and 2028.
Next year, 164,850 persons will be permitted entry, with the goal of achieving a total of 497,550 new entries by 2028.
Since taking office almost three years ago as the leader of a right-wing coalition, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has made two similar decisions. Between 2023 and 2025, the administration had already made the decision to provide more than 450,000 visas to migrants.
Meloni has adopted strict measures against unauthorized immigration in addition to regulations permitting the entry of new personnel.
