While raising doubts about a potential deal with Japan, President Donald Trump stated on Tuesday that the United States might negotiate a trade agreement with India that would let American businesses compete in the South Asian nation and leave it with substantially lower tariffs.
On Air Force One, Trump told reporters that he thought India was prepared to reduce restrictions for American businesses, which would lead to an agreement that would halt the 26% rate he had imposed on April 2 and then put on hold until July 9.
“India does not now admit anyone. We’ll have an agreement for significantly lower rates if India does what I believe they will do,” he said.
