Cillian talked about the process of filming Oppenheimer, the movie for which he is nominated for an Oscar.
On Wednesday, Cillian went to see Oppenheimer at the BFI IMAX Waterloo. When asked what lesson he learned most from portraying the “father of the atomic bomb,” the 47-year-old actor responded in depth.
“The most important thing I discovered or could rely on was that he was a human being; that was the primary aspect of him that I sought to understand.”
Famously, the Peaky Blinders actor shed twenty-five pounds to play Robert Oppenheimer. In the past, he acknowledged, “I love acting with my body, and I wanted to get Oppenheimer’s physicality and silhouette right.”
“We worked with the costume and tailoring, and I had to lose quite a bit of weight.”
The Inception actor continued, “You become competitive with yourself a little bit, which is not healthy,” in an attempt to dissuade people from attempting such drastic dieting. I would not suggest it.
Oppenheimer’s filming schedule contributed to Cillian’s weight loss as well. “It feels like you’re on this f***ing train that’s just bombing,” he said to The Guardian. Bang, bang, bang, and more bang. You get up after a few hours of sleep and go bam again.
“I was bursting with energy; I crossed a line and stopped worrying about anything, not even food. I was hyper-aware and completely immersed in the moment.
However, the fact that the character was like that made it good. He claimed he never ate. This occurs while Cillian’s outstanding performance in Oppenheimer continues to get accolades for Best Actor. In addition to Colman Domingo for Rustin, Paul Giamatti for The Holdovers, Jeffrey Wright for American Fiction, and Bradley Cooper for Maestro, he is also nominated for an Oscar.
