The US-style automobile registration system has been adopted by the Islamabad Excise and Taxation Department, which has issued a notification to put the new model into effect. The owner of the vehicle will now receive registration numbers under this scheme rather than the vehicle itself.
The announcement states that each owner will be given a unique license plate that is permanently associated with their name. Both new and used cars will be covered by the policy. When a vehicle is sold, the old registration number is revoked and a new one is given to the new owner.
Additionally, according to the notification, an owner who does not possess a car may keep their registration number for a maximum of one year.
