The Commission of Inquiry on Enforced Disappearances has been reorganized by the federal government, and Justice (retd) Arshad Hussain Shah has been named as its new chairperson.
The commission has stepped up its efforts since taking over, registering 15 new complaints and resolving 70 cases in July alone.
Since the beginning, thousands of cases have been handled.
The commission claims to have received 10,607 complaints involving suspected coerced disappearances. 8,770 cases have been settled as of July 31, 2025, while the other cases are currently being investigated.
New provincial representation appointments
In addition to Justice Arshad Hussain Shah, the federal government designated retired Judge Muhammad Bashir for Islamabad, Justice (retd) Syed Afsar Shah for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Justice (retd) Nazar Akbar for Sindh, and Justice (retd) Amanullah Yasinzai for Balochistan.
