Guy’s Hospital in London has been in touch with 136 ladies after learning that certain bottles of a defective freezing solution may have been accidentally used at its NHS-run clinic.
Following the discovery that certain bottles of a defective freezing solution may have been accidentally used in September and October 2022 at its NHS-operated clinic, Guy’s Hospital in London got in touch with the 136 ladies.
The clinic said that at the time, it was unaware of the liquid’s flaws.
A representative for the Guy’s and St. Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust stated that the manufacturing defect could have a negative effect on the likelihood of a frozen egg or embryo surviving the thawing process.
“We were made aware of a manufacturing issue with some bottles of a solution that may have been used to freeze eggs and embryos in our Assisted Conception Unit in September and October 2022,” they stated.
They said that Guy’s Hospital has now apologized for the delay and any inconvenience the blunder may have caused to everyone who was impacted.
The BBC reports that many of the affected women are thought to have received cancer treatment afterward, which may have prevented them from becoming naturally pregnant.
The Guy’s Hospital clinic continued to use the problematic solution for months after a safety notification regarding the freezing system was sent to all licensed clinics in February 2023, according to the Human Fertilization & Embryology Authority (HFEA).
