LAHORE: On Saturday, the Jamaat-e-Islami (JI)’s central consultative council unanimously rejected party leader Emir Sirajul Haq’s resignation.
JI spokesperson Qaiser Sharif stated that the council rejected the resignation and affirmed “full confidence” in Siraj. The JI leader would continue to carry out his duties in accordance with the party constitution, he said.
According to Qaiser, Siraj will address the central consultative council meeting shortly and hold a news conference later in the day.
He said that the JI’s failure to produce better results in the elections was due to rigging rather than Siraj, and that the party rejected the February 8 poll results and requested that the chief election commissioner resign immediately.
Following defeats in the February 8 general elections, in which the JI failed to make any electoral headway, Siraj announced his resignation from the party office on February 12.
The leader of the politico-religious party had resigned, citing “failures to achieve the desired electoral results.”
The Siraj-led party failed to win a single National Assembly member, but it did win five provincial seats.
