LAHORE: The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leadership has agreed to deploy the party’s media secretary, Marriyum Aurangzeb, to the Punjab Assembly to assist Maryam Nawaz if she is elected chief minister.
Following the February 8 general elections, the Punjab Assembly is expected to have its inaugural session on Friday (today), during which newly elected members will be sworn in.
PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif and President Shehbaz Sharif made this choice after consulting. They agreed that she would take her oath as an MPA in the Punjab Assembly today rather than returning to the National Assembly.
Marriyum was elected to the National Assembly thrice on a reserved seat and served as federal communications minister on multiple occasions.
This will be her first swearing-in as an MPA in the Punjab Assembly.
While elections for the leader of the House in the Punjab Assembly have yet to take place, the PML-N has begun preparing Maryam for the position of chief minister, given the party’s strong majority in the provincial assembly.
Maryam convened a parliamentary meeting earlier this week at the Jati Umra in Lahore, which was attended by 218 Punjab MPAs, including independents, PML-N MPAs, and reserved seat nominees. According to sources, Maryam presided over the meeting.
According to sources, there were 137 successful PML-N candidates, 58 women nominated for reserved seats, and over 22 independent members who joined the PML-N after the elections.
