Authorities claimed that the bodies of San Vicente mayor Brigitte Garcia, 27, and her communications director Jairo Loor were discovered in the Manabi province.
Police said that the two had been shot in the head and that the rental automobile was the source of the gunshots.
Ms. Garcia, a member of the left-wing Citizen Revolution Movement party led by former president Rafael Correa, is the most recent political victim to be killed in Ecuador.

The Manta Agustin Intriago mayor was assassinated in July 2023 while on a tour of a building site.
On social networking platform , Mr. Correa and Luisa Gonzalez, the party’s presidential candidate in the most recent elections, referred to Ms. Garcia’s death as an assassination.
