The Scottish government has announced a consultation on a bill that would forbid keeping laying hens in cages simply to produce eggs.
A public comment period regarding the phase-out of “enriched cages” is being held. These cages provide more space for the birds to nest, roost, scratch, and rest than the battery-operated or barren cages that were outlawed in the UK in 2012.
Jim Fairlie, the minister of agriculture, emphasized the pledge made in Holyrood’s most recent government program to “improve the welfare of laying hens to ensure their confinement does not negatively impact their normal behaviours.”
Significant strides have already been made in acknowledging the significance of animal welfare, and he continued the relationship between governmental regulations and public demand in the decisions people make when they purchase.
