In Japan, 1.5% of people have the surname Sato, making it the most popular family name.
Leading the research is Tohoku University professor Hiroshi Yoshida. If laws remain as they are, married couples will have to adopt the last name of their spouse in less than 500 years, reaching 100%.
According to the news, Prof. Yoshida emphasized that his estimate was “mechanically calculated based on an assumed scenario.”.
However, he continued, saying, “We might have to use our first names or numbers if everyone turns into Sato.
The study found that between 2022 and 2023, the percentage of Japanese people named Sato increased by a factor of 1.0083.
Half of the Japanese population will have the name in 2446 if the rate stays the same and the law doesn’t change. By 2531, that percentage will have increased to 100%.
