Widely regarded as pro-China, Mr. Muizzu seeks to lessen India’s enduring influence in his nation.
The PNC’s victory, which will be validated in a few days, has been referred to as a “super majority” by local media. The two-thirds majority in parliament needed to change the constitution has been reached.
The largest opposition party, the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), has only managed to win fifteen seats. It held the majority of seats before the voting on Sunday.
