Mr. Swinney has taken Humza Yousaf’s place and could become Scotland’s eighth first minister as early as Tuesday.
At 12 p.m. on Monday, the SNP announced that Mr. Swinney was the only candidate for leadership.
Leader of the SNP from 2000 to 2004, Mr. Swinney, declared that he was “deeply honoured” to assume the position and that his appointment marked “the beginning of a new chapter” for the party.
“Now, I know there’s some controversy that I’m the only candidate to stand for the leadership,” he insisted, even if he acknowledged that the SNP had “faced a rough time recently as a party.”
Maybe it should come as no surprise that I disagree greatly with that. The fact that I am the sole contender, in my opinion, proves that the Scottish National Party is now reuniting.
