The West Virginia attorney general is questioning the Department of Commerce and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) regarding their choice to limit public access to a “critical” database related to opioid provider registrations.
The Controlled Substances Act Registration Information Database, which was once open to the general public, is now only accessible on an agency-approved, case-by-case basis as of January 2021. The DEA acquired control of the database from the Commerce Department, and as a result, only individuals who can prove a genuine need for the information can access it. The database was used to offer real-time information regarding both active and retired DEA registrants.
In addition to stating that he has “been deep in the fight” against the opioid crisis, West Virginia Attorney General Patrick Morrisey declared that he is “very right’.
