Commanding the “elite” team will be a former head of state security, intelligence, or law enforcement, with additional authority granted by the Counter Terrorism Act. It will be partially funded by abandoning the Tories’ plan to deport people from Rwanda.
With the use of these authorities, law enforcement officials will be able to target organized immigration crime with search and seizure warrants, undertake financial investigations, and stop and search at the border.
Using his background as the former head of the Crown Prosecution Service, Sir Keir will draw on his experience to “replace gimmicks with graft” and lay out the measures in a speech on the Kent coast on Friday.
