According to the authorities, a river overflowed its banks due to landslides and rain, resulting in an additional 15 persons becoming missing.
Late on Saturday, severe weather rushed over mountainside settlements on the island of Sumatra, burying or damaging around 200 homes and buildings.
Rainfall causes a mixture of volcanic material, boulders, and pebbles from Mount Marapi to flow down the slopes in the form of cool lava.
While Mount Marapi has been active since January, 23 climbers perished in the volcano’s unexpected eruption in the latter part of last year.
It is one of Indonesia’s more than 120 active volcanoes.
Abdul Malik, the head of the rescue team in the province of West Sumatra, said: “The strong rain carried away the large rocks and ash from the Marapi volcano.”
