Experts anticipate heavier-than-normal rainfall nationwide as the monsoon season draws near, with considerable flooding hazards from July to September. To lessen the impact of future disasters, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has released advisories and recommended preventative actions.
This year’s monsoon rains are predicted to be above average, which raises the possibility of extensive flooding.
There is a significant chance that canals and rivers will overflow, which might result in severe flooding in nearby communities.
Particularly vulnerable to flash flooding are Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Kashmir.
Significant flooding is a high concern for major rivers like the Kabul, Indus, and Swat in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the Sutlej and Ravi in Punjab, and portions of Sindh.
GIS Team Leader Zahra Hassan: “In GB and AJK, flash flooding events may occur.” In addition, there is a chance of significant flooding in rivers including the Ravi and Sutlej, as well as the Indus, Kabul, and Swat in KPK.”
“An emergency plan outlining the roles and responsibilities of all stakeholders has been prepared,” stated Kazim Rahim, Manager of Operations for NDMA. We encourage people to stay inside during storms, to reinforce the roofs of mud homes, and to avoid driving across flooded rivers.”
