The Star Wars franchise will soon have its first female director in Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy.

As the first woman of color to direct the next installment of the science fiction series, Star Wars: New Jedi Order, 45-year-old Pakistani-Canadian filmmaker is also a first.

“I’m very thrilled about the project because I feel what we’re about to create is something very special,” Sharmeen told CNN on New Year’s Eve, ahead of the filming that is scheduled to start this year.

“We’re in 2024 now, and it’s about time that a woman steps forward to shape a story in a galaxy far, far away,” the speaker continued.

The Academy Award winner also said that Steven Knight, the man of Peaky Blinders, wrote the movie and that Daisy Ridley will reprise her role as Rey.

In the film industry, Sharmeen is well-known for directing two Ms. Marvel episodes and winning an Oscar for her documentary Saving Face.

Over her career, she has received numerous honors, including a Knight International Journalism Award, two Academy Awards, and seven Emmy Awards.
