Researchers claim that this is the first lunar tunnel discovered that may be accessible to people.
The hollowed-out tube is located beneath a pit that is roughly 100 meters wide in the Sea of Tranquillity, a dimly lit area on the moon’s near side that is visible to the unaided eye.
In 1969, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin became the first people to set foot on the moon, landing in this same spot.
A rough estimate of the cave’s dimensions is 30–80 meters (98–262 feet) in length, 45–47 feet in width, and 130–170 meters (436–557) below ground.
The scientists also noted that there are no entry sites in the previous caverns discovered on the moon.
NASA is getting ready to launch its first crewed expedition to the moon in over 50 years when this “milestone discovery” occurs.
Experts believe the subsurface caves may be “suitable for habitation purposes” despite the fact that the moon is inhospitable to human life and that its surface is strongly exposed to cosmic radiation.
Assistant professor Leonardo Carrer of the University of Trento in Italy stated: “We have found and precisely documented a cave that is truly reachable from a pit on the lunar surface for the first time.
