On Monday, Luton Crown Court condemned Allen Morgan.
At the grocery store they both owned in Linslade, Bedfordshire, on August 13, 1981, his former wife Carol was discovered fatally slashed. At the time, he was having an affair with his 75-year-old new wife Margaret Morgan.
A jury found the 74-year-old guilty on all counts of conspiracy to kill in June.
“All those who attended the scene were shocked by the brutality of the killing,” remarked Mr. Justice Martin Spencer on Monday, when he sentenced Morgan.
“You, Mr. Morgan, are the only individual who is aware of the murderer’s identity.
You have been keeping that secret for the past forty years.
The murderer, if he is still alive, is still at large; nevertheless, the law has now caught up with you, and you will have to pay the appropriate punishment for your involvement in this crime.
On the day Carol was killed, her husband accompanied his two stepchildren to the Luton theater to see a double bill, leading the officers to initially believe Carol was the victim of a burglary gone wrong.
However, a 2018 cold case inquiry turned out to be Jane Bunting, a 17-year-old witness who connected Allen Morgan to the murder.
