Following the escape of a “very dangerous” druglord from maximum-security incarceration and disturbances at many jails in the violently unstable nation, Ecuador has proclaimed a state of emergency. As officials hunted for Jose Adolfo Macias, also known as Fito, President Daniel Noboa, who has been in power since November, announced a 60-day mobilization of soldiers in Ecuador’s streets and jails. The president also announced a daily curfew from 11 p.m. (04:00 GMT) to 5 a.m. (10:00 GMT). Noboa claimed in an Instagram video that the state of emergency will provide military personnel with “all the political and legal support” they require to carry out their responsibilities in the fight against “narcoterrorists.” We refuse to give up or deal with terrorists until we bring peace back.
