As the nation descends into anarchy amid what the new president has referred to as an “internal armed conflict,” at least ten people have died in Ecuador as a result of a string of attacks that are being attributed to armed gangs. Jose Adolfo Macias, also known as “Fito,” the head of Los Choneros, the largest gang in Ecuador, managed to escape, prompting President Daniel Noboa, 36, to impose a 60-day state of emergency and a nightly curfew on Monday. At Guayaquil’s port city’s La Regional prison, Macias was incarcerated for 34 years.
