According to German media, police believe the individual, who was last known to reside in Poland, was one of the divers who allegedly installed explosive devices on pipelines that ran beneath the Baltic Sea in September 2022, carrying gas from Russia to Germany.
A warrant for a Ukrainian person has been issued, according to confirmation from the national public prosecutor’s office in Poland. It did note, though, that he escaped to Ukraine in early July and was not detained in Poland.
The investigation has also identified a second guy and a woman who are Ukrainian diving instructors, but no arrest warrants have been filed for them as of yet.
When contacted by the Reuters news agency, the German prosecutor general’s office declined to comment on the reports.
Who was responsible for the blasts that damaged three of the four pipelines carrying billions of cubic feet of gas to Europe is still unknown nearly two years later.
Both the West and Russia denied any involvement in the explosions, despite accusations to that effect from both parties. Nobody has ever accepted accountability.
A Swedish investigation in November 2022 discovered explosive residue on a number of items taken from the blast site, proving the explosions were intentional detonations.
