According to an announcement from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Torres-Navarro, 38, entered the US unlawfully at the Texas–Mexico border and was subsequently detained in New York state.
He is on Peru’s wanted list and is thought to be the gang’s leader, Los Killers.
According to ICE, he is currently being held at a federal detention center while immigration procedures are ongoing.
Torres-Navarro was first detained on May 16 after entering the country unlawfully, according to an ICE statement provided to the news. He was also given a notice to appear for immigration proceedings.
After learning that he was in fact sought in Peru around two months later, ICE noted that he was eventually apprehended on Wednesday during a “targeted enforcement action” in the town of Endicott.
“Gianfranco Torres-Navarro represents a serious risk to our communities,” stated Thomas Brophy, a senior state immigration officer.
“We won’t allow New York to be a safe haven for dangerous non-citizens,” he stated.
According to reports, Mr. Torres-Navarro left Peru after reportedly murdering a retired police officer there.
