The British artist, who was born in Belize, wrote music for the Paralympic Games in London (2012) and became the first woman of color to have a piece included in the Proms.
“I am thrilled to accept this royal appointment,” she stated.
During King Charles I’s reign, the position was established and bestowed upon a musician who contributes to the musical landscape of the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth.
Although the master’s responsibilities are not predetermined, he frequently writes music for important royal events like coronations and royal weddings.
Wallen had previously been asked to write pieces commemorating Charles’s mother’s Diamond and Golden Jubilees.
The function is similar to the poet laureate position and has a fixed tenure of ten years as of late.
Orkney- and Sutherland-based Ms. Wallen called the position “a privilege and a great honor.”.
“I look forward to championing music and music-making for all,” she stated.
