It occurs at a time when analysts claim that Canada’s quickly expanding population is placing a pressure on public services like healthcare and housing.
Federal figures show that immigration accounted for almost 97% of Canada’s population growth last year.
Mr. Trudeau and his administration have come under fire for raising immigration levels without improving services or building more homes.
In the last two months, Canada’s unemployment rate has risen to 6.4%, with an estimated 1.4 million unemployed people nationwide.
Mr. Trudeau stated at a press conference that he is considering reworking the temporary foreign worker program due to labor market shifts.
He declared, “It’s unfair to those temporary foreign workers, some of whom are being mistreated and exploited, and it’s unfair to Canadians who are struggling to find good jobs.”
Employers in Canada may appoint foreign nationals to temporary positions under the Temporary Foreign Worker program in the event that no competent Canadian is available.
Labor activists and, most recently, the UN have criticized the initiative, calling it “a breeding ground for it.
