Based on replies to questions about grade proficiency in areas such math, science, computer science, social studies, English, and foreign languages from the June 2024 School Pulse Panel, the report was created. According to responses, by the end of the 2023–2024 school year, 32% of children nationally were falling behind grade level, down from 33% in June 2022.
The largest reduction in grade level competency was observed in students in the Northeastern United States, where the percentage of students falling behind increased to 31% from 26% two years prior.
In the same year, there was a slight increase in the Midwest as well—from 30% to 31%—and schools in the West were found to have the greatest percentage of pupils falling behind grade level—from 37% in 2022 to 39% this year.
