After receiving a cancer diagnosis in January, Eriksson stated he had “at best” a year to live. His family later revealed that he passed away on August 26 at the age of 76.
It was around 7:00 local time when Eriksson’s casket arrived at the church in Fryksande.
Hundreds of mourners gathered on the churchyard to view the event on a big screen. The service was conducted in both Swedish and English.
The last few months of Eriksson’s life were mentioned in the eulogy, when he fulfilled his dream of coaching Liverpool in a charity match in March.
As his corpse was loaded into a vehicle and driven to Kollsberg’s Hembygdsgard, a guard of honor was erected.
Members of the Swedish royal family and Roy Hodgson, the manager of England after Eriksson, were among the guests.
Attending as well was Beckham, the Three Lions’ captain under Eriksson.
During his five-year tenure, Eriksson—the first non-British manager of the England team—saw the team go to the quarterfinals of three major championships.
Eriksson’s children, Johan and Lina, were among the mourners received by his 95-year-old father, Sven.
