Gunshots were heard when Mr. Trump was out for a game at the Trump International Golf Course in West Palm Beach, Florida.
Reporters were informed by Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw that a Secret Service agent, who was policing the course ahead of Mr. Trump, saw a rifle barrel emerge from a perimeter fence.
He claimed that once he engaged the person right away, they took off.
It is now unknown if the suspect opened fire first, if they shot at all, or if the Secret Service was the only ones to shoot.
Local police halted Ryan Wesley Routh’s truck and took him into custody. Routh, 58.
When officers later searched the location where the man—who they assumed to be Routh—was seen, they discovered two rucksacks, a GoPro, and an AK-47-style weapon with a scope.
According to Palm Beach County state attorney Dave Aronberg, Routh was “lying in wait” for Mr. Trump, as reported by the news.
