When the singer and actress was in her mid-20s, she was married to Sam Cooper, her ex-husband, and the two had children, Marnie, 12, and Ethel, 11.
She had previously recorded two studio albums, had success with hits like “Smile” and “The Fear,” and won a Brit Award for best British female solo artist before becoming a mother.
Speaking about parenting, Allen and her longtime friend Miquita Oliver host the podcast Miss Me?. “I think I had children for all the wrong reasons, really,” Allen remarked.
“Because I was craving love that is unconditional, something I have never experienced before.”
“And also, my career was at such high speed, high pressure, and I felt like very overwhelmed by what was happening,” the now 39-year-old actress continued. You know, I just didn’t get much rest.
Saying, ‘It’s not about me, actually this is about this other person that’s inside me,’ seemed to be the only way to put an end to people’s harassment of me.
Oliver asks if it worked, and Allen responds, “Yes, they did leave me alone.” I don’t think I fully comprehended what was going on or what I had committed myself to.
