According to a Ministry of Justice source, 37 individuals were mistakenly freed on September 10th because their restraining order violations were mistakenly recorded under laws that had been repealed.
This meant that these instances were not considered for exclusions, which were intended to keep people convicted of certain crimes from being freed.
While the majority of inmates have been taken back into custody, five have not yet been sent back to prison.
It is believed that one of them who was unintentionally freed reoffended and was accused of “intentionally touching” a woman. He was sent back to jail.
According to a spokesman for the Ministry of Justice, “public safety is our top priority.” For this reason, we acted decisively to maintain the most dangerous criminals behind bars and repair the dysfunctional prison system we inherited.
“Among other things, this involved preventing the early release of domestic abuse offenses such stalking and dominating behavior.
We are collaborating with law enforcement to promptly bring back into custody a relatively small number of criminals who were wrongfully accused and sentenced under laws that have since been abolished.
“The convictions are still enforceable; the offenders have been under monitoring since their release and will shortly return to prison.
