KUALA LUMPUR: According to the State Department, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio will meet with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi on Friday while attending an ASEAN foreign ministers’ meeting in Malaysia.
The conference takes place as Washington and Beijing are still embroiled in disagreements over everything from advanced technology and Taiwan to trade and fentanyl.
Along with Japan, South Korea, and Australia, Rubio and Wang are in Kuala Lumpur for an Association of Southeast Asian Nations meeting of foreign ministers.
Since US President Donald Trump took office in January, tensions between Beijing and Washington have increased dramatically. The two nations are involved in a tariff war that has resulted in a sharp increase in levies on each other’s goods.
