In an attack that a terrorist organization claimed responsibility for, a police captain was slain in Iran’s unrest-plagued southeast on Saturday, according to local media.
According to the ISNA news agency, which cited authorities, Captain Abolghassem Piri of the police command in Suran village, Sistan-Baluchistan province, on the Pakistani border, “was assassinated by armed criminals.”
In a Telegram message, Jaish al-Adl claimed responsibility for the attack.
The incident happened “inside a store where the owner was killed in the shooting,” according to ISNA.
Sistan-Baluchistan, one of the poorest areas of Iran, has long been troubled by radicals, rebels from the minority, and drug-smuggling gangs.
In the same region of Mirjaveh, on September 12, three police officers were slain in an attack that was also claimed by Jaish al-Adl.
