The 39-year-old country music icon revealed to Jimmy Fallon on Monday night how, at the Nashville awards last year, he “fumbled” the glass trophy right away, making history as the oldest person to win new artist of the year.
After that, Fallon presented a clip of glass breaking during a live local broadcast that was transmitted from the show’s backstage.
One reporter on -TV overheard Stephanie Langston saying, “Oh goodness, Jelly Roll just broke his award.” Indeed, he remains in that position. It looks like it’s his award, I think. He simply let it fall to the ground.
Jelly Roll said to Fallon, “First of all, you could have heard a mouse urinate on cotton when it first dropped.” “I mean, it was dead silent, and right after you could’ve heard a cricket fart, you heard a bunch of people go ‘Aww.’”
He clarified that the regrettable situation was probably caused by the weight of the trophy and his perspiring palms.
The man said, “I just had the sweatiest, shakiest palms from being so nervous and excited.” I am not a physically fit man for another reason—that item is heavy. It was really heavy.
“And I was so excited, and I was going to change it from one hand to the other to shake somebody’s hand, and it just boomed.”
