Alejandro Arcos took office as mayor of Chilpancingo, the capital of Guerrero state, which includes Acapulco, on Monday. Chilpancingo is a city in the southwest.
Gangs and drug-related violence have long plagued the neighborhood.
Unconfirmed rumors said that Mr. Arcos had been severed. Although they were seen at the spot in Chilpancingo where the body was reportedly recovered, police have not confirmed any specifics of his death.
Guerrero governor Evelyn Salgado released a statement saying, “His loss mourns the entire Guerrero society and fills us with indignation.”
The homicide on Sunday is being looked into, according to the state attorney general’s office.
Three days had passed since Francisco Tapia, the secretary of the newly elected city administration, was fatally murdered.
The national leader of the Institutional Revolutionary Party and a senator from Mexico, Alejandro Moreno, stated: “They had been in office for less than a week.”
These were young, sincere public servants striving to advance their society.
A call was also made for the federal attorney general’s office, considering “the situation of ungovernability in Guerrero,” to take the lead in the murder probe.
