The previous president of Botswana has spoken negatively about Mokgweetsi Masisi in a number of interviews since 2019, when he first started to voice his displeasure with the person he had personally chosen to succeed him.
Five years ago, Khama told the Focus on Africa program that Masisi was “drunk on power.”
Since then, the 71-year-old has gone into exile, revealed details of a poisoning plan, and faced charges in Botswana for a number of offenses, including money laundering and unlawful firearm possession.
He had earlier brushed off the accusations as “fabricated,” but this month he went back to his house and showed up for a preliminary hearing.
The upcoming general election in the diamond-rich nation is probably going to be tainted by the conflict between Khama and Masisi.
Khama was beaming throughout a second, brief court appearance on Tuesday.
It is currently thought that the authorities are debating whether or not to press charges.
Given that Khama’s co-accused is no longer facing charges, there’s a good chance that everything will come to an end. However, the court will not meet again for another month following the election.
