The Olympic swimmer passed away in October 2023 at 20 weeks of pregnancy with Harper, the child she and her husband had named.
Adlington experienced her second miscarriage in a short period of time, and she has since joined the Petals infant loss counseling organization as an ambassador.
Talking about the UK Adlington celebrated a recent development with Sarah-Jane Mee tonight: anyone who has experienced a miscarriage in the UK is now eligible to apply for a baby loss certificate.
The service was restricted to parents who had lost a loved one since September 2018 until this week, but it is now open to all parents.
We really have one that’s framed,” Adlington remarked. “We applied as soon as we learned about the credentials.
We didn’t have many items in the house that give her a sense of belonging, even though she is a member of the family, so having it was something we really desired.
Her being a member of the family is kind of brought home. They always remark, ‘Harper is my sister,’ and my kids know it.”
The diplomas, she said, “are so fundamental to make [the loss] part of your life, but they’re not going to take away the pain.”
