ISLAMABAD Following days of impasse, major political groups, including the opposition, decided on Friday to work toward a consensus and eventually create a “joint draft” for revising the Constitution. This was a first step in the right direction, according to Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F) Chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman.
Among other things, the “Constitutional Package” attempts to establish a federal constitutional court and extend the Chief Justice of Pakistan’s (CJP) term by three years.
The administration had intended to introduce the bill to modify the Constitution last month, but members of the opposition benches and its allies fiercely rejected the plan, compelling the administration to start a consultation process instead.
Speaking to reporters today, Fazl stated that the administration had submitted its proposed modifications to the constitution.
