The International Criminal Tribunal (ICT) of Bangladesh is seeking Hasina for her alleged role in “crimes against humanity” during the protests, which resulted in the deaths of hundreds of people.
Hasina was viewed as an autocrat whose administration brutally suppressed criticism throughout her more than two decades in power in Bangladesh.
45 other people, including former government officials who also left the country, have also been the subject of arrest orders.
“The court has ordered the arrest of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her appearance in court on November 18,” said Muhammad Tajul Islam, the ICT’s chief prosecutor.
He stated that Sheikh Hasina led the group responsible for the July–August massacres, murders, and crimes against humanity.
After student-led protests against government employment quotas escalated into mass rallies, Bangladesh’s interim health ministry reported in August that the violence this summer had killed over 1,000 people, making it the deadliest period in the nation’s history since independence in 1971.
