During the 2024 monsoon season, Punjab and the nation saw previously unheard-of levels of rainfall and temperature swings, according to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD).
Between July 1 and August 30, this year, Pakistan received 51% more rainfall than usual; some regions saw record-breaking floods, while others saw abnormally high temperatures.
The biggest increases were recorded in Sindh and Balochistan, where rainfall increased by 108% and 111%, respectively, over normal.
Punjab saw a 48% increase, while Gilgit-Baltistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa saw smaller increases of 2% and 5%, respectively.
As opposed to the average, Azad Jammu and Kashmir saw a 21% drop in rainfall.
Pakistan typically receives 212 mm of rain during the monsoon, but this year’s totals greatly above predictions.
