Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) has been granted minority status under Article 30 of the Constitution, according to a ruling by the Supreme Court of India.
By a majority vote of 4–3, the university’s rights as a minority school were upheld.
The decision comes as discussions about the university’s standing and its effects on educational rights are still going strong.
The court underlined that AMU, which was established in 1875, is eligible for minority advantages because it meets the educational needs of the Muslim population.
