Rudy Giuliani Health Update: Breathing on His Own After Pneumonia Hospital Condition and Current Progress Former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani is currently in hospital recovering from pneumonia. His spokesperson confirmed that he is now breathing without mechanical ventilation. He still remains under close medical supervision in critical but stable condition. Doctors had earlier placed him on ventilator support when his condition worsened. Medical teams removed the support after his breathing improved. His family and primary doctor are staying close during his treatment. Underlying Health Complications Giuliani has long been affected by respiratory issues linked to lung damage diagnosed after the September 11 attacks. His spokesperson said these existing conditions made it harder for his body to fight pneumonia. The illness developed quickly and severely impacted his breathing. Medical staff had to act fast to stabilize his oxygen levels before he improved. Connection to 9/11 Health Impact Giuliani was mayor of New York City during the September 11 attacks. He was widely recognized for his leadership during the crisis and earned the nickname America Mayor. Exposure to toxic dust and smoke after the attacks led to long term health problems for many first responders and city workers. Researchers have reported that these illnesses have claimed more lives over time than the attacks themselves. Political Career and Public Life After leaving office in 2001, Giuliani pursued national politics. He later ran for president during the Republican nomination race but did not win. He later became a key supporter and legal advisor for Donald Trump during the 2016 presidential campaign. Legal and Financial Challenges Following the 2020 election, Giuliani faced legal trouble after promoting false claims about election fraud. A jury later ordered him to pay damages to election workers in a defamation case. He also faced disbarment, losing his ability to practice law, and later declared bankruptcy due to financial pressures. Latest Health Situation His spokesperson says he is now improving and responding to treatment. Doctors continue to monitor him closely while he remains hospitalized.

The incident happened near Arcadia Lake in Edmond, about 13 miles north of Oklahoma City. Police said the shooting started around 9:00 PM during a large gathering of young adults. The party had reportedly been planned through social media and drew a big crowd after dark. Victims Suffer Gunshot Wounds Authorities confirmed that several victims suffered gunshot injuries. Emergency teams rushed many people to nearby hospitals. Others left the scene on their own to seek treatment. According to hospital officials, multiple injured individuals were admitted across local medical centers. Some are still receiving care, though the full extent of their conditions has not been shared. No Arrests Yet, Investigation Ongoing Police have not made any arrests so far. However, they said there is no ongoing threat to the public at this time. Officers are actively investigating and working to identify those responsible. Officials described the event as an “unsanctioned gathering” that took place without proper permission. It was promoted online under the name “Sunday Funday,” which attracted a large crowd to the lakeside area. Authorities Urge Public Cooperation Law enforcement officials are asking anyone with information to come forward. They are reviewing social media posts and eyewitness accounts to track down suspects. A police spokesperson acknowledged the fear caused by the incident and said the department is committed to bringing those responsible to justice.

Afghanistan Women Football Team Returns to International Stage After FIFA Decision FIFA Approves Return Under Special Rules FIFA has approved a new rule that allows Afghanistan women footballers to return to international competition under special circumstances. The decision enables players to represent their country even when their national federation cannot officially support a team. This change follows years of restrictions after the Taliban took control of Afghanistan in 2021. Women were banned from sports, and many footballers left the country to seek safety abroad. Players Forced Into Exile After 2021 Afghanistan women last played an official match in 2018. After 2021, women faced strict limits on sport and public participation. Many national team players relocated to countries such as Australia, the United States, Europe, and the Middle East. More than 80 Afghan women footballers now live outside Afghanistan. Some were under contract before the political change, while others joined later as refugees. Formation of Afghan Women United FIFA supported a refugee team called Afghan Women United in 2025 as part of a pilot program. This team gave displaced players a platform to compete and stay active in international football. The team has already played friendly matches. It recorded its first win against Libya during the FIFA United Women Series in 2025. New Pathway for International Matches The updated FIFA rule allows a national or representative team to compete even when the member federation cannot officially register it. This ensures players are not blocked from football due to political or external conditions. Afghanistan will not take part in the 2027 Women's World Cup. However, the team may join qualification matches for the 2028 Olympics. Their return to international fixtures is expected in June. Leadership and Player Response Former captain Khalida Popal welcomed the decision and said the team represents strength and hope for Afghan women. She highlighted that players inside Afghanistan still face major restrictions. She said the team will continue to speak for those who cannot leave the country and will support young players in exile communities. Training and Preparation Plans FIFA has organized regional selection camps in England and Australia. A training camp in New Zealand is also planned for June. These camps will help prepare the squad for upcoming international matches.

Bondi Attack Sparks Testimony on Rising Antisemitism in Australia Royal Commission Hears Emotional Account from Victim’s Family The daughter of a victim from the Bondi Beach attack has spoken publicly about the emotional impact of the shooting and the rise of antisemitism in Australia. Sheina Gutnick shared her testimony at a royal commission set up after a deadly attack at a Hanukkah event in December that left fifteen people dead. Her father, Reuven Morrison, lost his life while trying to stop the gunmen by throwing objects at them. She described him as deeply proud of being Australian after he fled the Soviet Union as a teenager and later built his life in Australia. Fear and Online Abuse After the Attack Gutnick told the hearing in Sydney that she has since received disturbing messages suggesting she should also have been killed. She said the experience has made her feel unsafe in her own country. She also said she has noticed a major shift in public attitudes since October 2023. According to her testimony, antisemitic language has become more visible and more openly expressed in public discussions. She expressed concern that some people try to justify the violence by framing it as political criticism rather than hate. Attack Details and Legal Proceedings Authorities confirmed that the attackers targeted the Hanukkah gathering in Bondi. One of the suspects, Sajid Akram, died at the scene after police responded. His son, Naveed Akram, was critically injured and later taken into custody. He now faces multiple charges, including murder and committing a terrorist attack. Wider Community Impact Another witness at the commission, identified only as AAL, described Australia as a welcoming home after migrating from South Africa in the 1980s. He said recent events have changed his view and raised concerns about the future safety of his family. He expressed uncertainty about whether Australia remains the right place for his grandchildren due to the rise in antisemitic incidents. Growing Concerns Raised by the Commission The royal commission has received thousands of submissions from the public. Early hearings are focused on personal experiences of antisemitism and its impact on communities. Former High Court judge Virginia Bell, who leads the commission, highlighted a sharp increase in antisemitic incidents. She noted that similar trends are being seen in other Western countries and linked the rise to tensions related to events in the Middle East. She also recommended stronger gun control measures and expanded security for Jewish events across Australia.

Bondi Beach Attack Report Highlights Prior Security Warning Early threat alert before the incident A Jewish security group warned New South Wales police about a high threat level before the Bondi Beach attack. The warning came days before the incident during a planned Hanukkah related gathering. The group shared concerns about upcoming events and asked for stronger police protection. Police received this information on 8 December. Details of the Bondi Beach shooting The attack took place on 14 December at a public event in a beachside park. Two attackers used firearms and opened fire on people attending the gathering. Police responded at the scene and stopped the attackers. The father was killed during the response. The son survived with serious injuries and was later taken into custody. Authorities charged the son with 59 offences, including multiple counts of murder and one terrorism related charge. Inquiry findings and recommendations A royal commission led by former High Court judge Virginia Bell reviewed the incident. The interim report identified gaps in security response and coordination. The report issued 14 recommendations. These include stronger gun control measures and wider use of special policing arrangements during major community events. It also suggested extending protection plans used for high holy days to other Jewish community gatherings. Government response The Prime Minister confirmed that the National Security Committee accepted all recommendations. Authorities plan to apply the changes across relevant security agencies.

Olbermann reacts to White House invitation

Former ESPN broadcaster Keith Olbermann mocked the U.S. men’s hockey team after they appeared open to accepting an invitation from President Donald Trump to attend his State of the Union address.

Both the men’s and women’s teams recently won Olympic gold against Canada at the 2026 Milan Cortina Winter Olympics. Jack Hughes sealed the men’s victory in overtime, while Megan Keller did the same for the women.

After the win, Trump invited both teams to attend his speech. However, the women’s team declined, citing academic and professional commitments. USA Hockey said the athletes appreciated the recognition but could not attend due to prior obligations.

Olbermann praised the women’s decision. On social media, he claimed they refused to act as political props. Then he turned his attention to the men’s team.

Criticism aimed at the men’s team

Video showed Trump calling the men’s team in their locker room after their gold medal win. During the call, he suggested arranging travel for them to attend the address. At one point, a player quickly responded, “We’re in,” before Trump finished speaking.

Olbermann sharply criticized that reaction. He accused the players of failing to see the long term impact of appearing at a political event. His comments added to his long record of public criticism toward Trump.

Meanwhile, it remains unclear whether the men’s team officially accepted the invitation.

Social media backlash and celebration

Olbermann also objected to a White House post that featured an eagle attacking a goose after the U.S. defeated Canada 2 to 1. The win marked the first American men’s hockey gold since the famous United States men’s national ice hockey team victory at the 1980 Winter Olympics.

The image appeared to reference comments previously made by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau about national pride in hockey.

While Olbermann criticized the administration’s tone, some players welcomed the president’s outreach. Forward Matthew Tkachuk said it was an honor to hear from the president and represent the country after their victory.

The team continued celebrating in Miami, including a stop at E11EVEN Miami. The NHL regular season resumes Wednesday, while the Professional Women’s Hockey League returns Thursday.

During the phone call, Trump joked that he would face impeachment if he failed to invite the women’s team as well. He also mentioned possibly sending a military plane to bring the players to Washington.

Trump’s State of the Union address is scheduled for 9 p.m. ET on Tuesday.
