A National Security Council (NSC) official said in a statement Wednesday that Mark Swidan, Kai Li, and John Leung are returning to the United States.
“Soon they will return and be reunited with their families for the first time in many years,” the statement continued.
At least one Chinese national in US custody was released as part of the purportedly months-long exchange.
According to an American person familiar with the talks, President Biden brought up the problem of Americans being unlawfully held in China directly with President Xi Jinping during their meeting earlier this month during the Apec summit in Peru. During his August visit to China, National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan also called for their return.
