Prosecutors End Long Running Legal Battle
New York prosecutors have decided not to pursue the remaining rape charge against former Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein. The decision ends a legal battle that lasted for years and involved multiple trials.
The case centered on allegations made by actress and hairstylist Jessica Mann. Prosecutors announced that they would not move forward with another trial after speaking with Mann, who no longer wishes to continue the court process.
Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg said prosecutors still believe Mann’s account and consider her a credible witness. However, they respected her decision not to go through another lengthy trial.
Case Went Through Multiple Trials
The rape charge involving Jessica Mann had already been tried three times.
The first trial took place in 2020. During that case, Mann, former production assistant Miriam Haley, and model Kaja Sokola accused Weinstein of using his influence in the entertainment industry to sexually abuse women.
The trial resulted in Weinstein’s conviction. However, an appeals court overturned that conviction in 2024. Judges ruled that the trial court had allowed testimony from women whose allegations were not directly connected to the charges being considered.
A second trial followed in 2025. Jurors found Weinstein guilty of sexually assaulting Miriam Haley. However, they could not reach a unanimous decision on Mann’s rape allegation.
As a result, the court ordered another trial focused on Mann’s claim.
Jury Remained Deadlocked Again
The third trial concluded in May 2026. Once again, jurors failed to reach a unanimous verdict on the rape charge.
During her testimony, Mann said she had consensual encounters with Weinstein in the past. However, she alleged that he forced her into unwanted sex in a hotel room in March 2013 despite her repeated refusals.
Weinstein’s legal team maintained that the encounter was consensual and denied the accusation.
Weinstein’s Team Welcomes Decision
Following the announcement, Weinstein’s representative said the former producer was relieved by the outcome.
His team argued that the case should never have moved forward. They claimed that emails, text messages, and other private communications supported Weinstein’s position.
Other Convictions Still Stand
Although prosecutors dropped the rape charge, Weinstein still faces serious legal consequences.
He remains convicted of sexually assaulting Miriam Haley in New York. Prosecutors have recommended a 20 year prison sentence for that conviction, although the court has not yet issued a final sentence.
In addition, Weinstein is serving a 16 year prison sentence in California after a separate conviction involving sexual crimes.
Impact on the #MeToo Movement
More than 100 women have accused Weinstein of sexual misconduct, assault, or rape over the years. While many accusations never resulted in criminal charges, the cases against him became a turning point in public discussions about abuse of power.
The allegations and convictions helped fuel the global #MeToo movement. The movement encouraged victims of sexual abuse and harassment to come forward and share their experiences.
Even though the final New York rape charge has now been dropped, Weinstein remains one of the most prominent figures convicted during the rise of the #MeToo era.
