Members of local indigenous communities and scientists from the nonprofit organization Conservation International discovered them on an expedition to Alto Mayo, which includes the Amazon jungle.
According to Conservation International, up to 48 other new species may have been discovered, but more research is required to confirm if they are novel.
According to Trond Larsen, senior director of Conservation International, “it is truly amazing to find so many new species of mammals and vertebrates, especially in such a human-influenced landscape.”
Alto Mayo is a protected area in northern Peru that includes Indigenous territory and a variety of ecosystems.
According to Conservation International, its comparatively high human density puts strain on environmentalism through agricultural expansion and deforestation.
