According to a complaint made public by the Brooklyn District Attorney’s office, Sebastian Zapeta-Calil, a 33-year-old undocumented immigrant who is accused of setting fire to a sleeping woman on a train in New York City, was arraigned on Tuesday on charges of first- and second-degree murder and arson.
According to the complaint filed in Brooklyn Criminal Court, the New York City Office of the Medical Examiner concluded that the victim, who has not been named, died by homicide and that “thermal injuries” and “smoke inhalation” were the cause of her death.
According to police officers on the scene, Zapeta-Calil allegedly set fire to the victim’s garments on Sunday morning and “fanned the flames” by putting a shirt around her, engulfing her in flames.
