Following Donald Trump’s announcement that a meeting between the two was being arranged, the Kremlin stated Friday that President Vladimir Putin was amenable to discussions with the next US president.
Without offering a specific strategy, Trump, who takes office on January 20, has said he can quickly resolve the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, which has lasted for almost three years.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told reporters, “The president has stated his openness to contact with international leaders, including the US president, including Donald Trump, on multiple occasions.”
Trump announced on Thursday that he was setting up a meeting with Putin. At a meeting with Republican governors at his Mar-a-Lago club in Palm Beach, Florida, Trump stated, “He wants to meet, and we’re setting it up.”
