ISLAMABAD: In spite of resistance from journalistic organizations and Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F), the Senate Standing Committee on Interior has adopted the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (Peca) amendment bill.
JUI-F Senator Kamran Murtaza voiced concerns about the bill’s hurried approval procedure during negotiations, according to News. “How is it possible that this measure was approved so fast? He said, “There wasn’t enough time to read, much less consult on it.”
He criticized the law for being unclear, stating that the definition of “fake news” is vague and that it is unclear how it would be identified.
The PML-N Journalists’ concerns were echoed by Senator Irfan Siddiqui, who stated: “It would have been better to consult journalists beforehand.”
