Google announced in an X post on Monday that it will rename the “Gulf of Mexico” to “Gulf of America” after it is formally amended in the US Geographic Names System.
The name will still be “Gulf of Mexico” in Mexico, but the change will be noticeable in the US. Google Maps will display both names for people outside of the two countries.
The Interior Department of the Trump administration said on Friday that it had formally renamed the Alaskan peak Denali, the highest mountain in North America, to Mount McKinley and the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America.
With Mount McKinley, Alphabet’s Google Maps will undergo a similar transformation.
The name was ordered by President Donald Trump.
